The Baptist Church of Jesus Christ at Burlington to the Northbend Association of Baptists when met at Middle Creek meetinghouse Boone county Ky. 3rd Friday in Aug. 1845.

     Sendeth Christian Salutation

Very Dear Brethren

It is with feelings of mingled pleasure and regret, that we address you this, our Annual epistle. Of pleasure as it is Sweet for brethren to mingle together their praises and supplications to Almighty God. Of regrets, as it is painful to give information of the languid condition of religion among us. But tis no less painful than true. Since our last commmunication to you, our continued scene of coldness & inactivity seems to have marked our movements. Though in many respects God's richest blessings have been freely lavished upon us they seem to have inspired us with but little fervent gratitude and active zeal for his glory. In consequence of the lukewarm conditions of our church and other professons of religion around us, vice and immorality have increased, and sinners are perishing in their sins. A knowledge of these facts together with a sense of our infinite obligations to Almighty God and Solemn

[p. 53]
responsibilities to the unconverted around us, have of late burdened us, and many anxious inquires have agitated our bosom respecting our postion in Society and the happy influence we should exert. As languidness does in no way remove our obligations, nor for one moment release us from the Solemn responsibilities we are under to Christ and his Cause, our fervent supplications have been ascending "the throne of God's Grace" that he would visit us with a refreshing from on high. Then would we be relieved of this barronness of Soul, religion true and vital would flourish as in days past, and our hearts would be cheered at the sight of sinners returned to God. God's worship would be pleasant indeed and duty a delightsome task. From the increase of interest in our Social and other meetings of late, we can but hope that this happy season is near at hand. May our highest expectations be speedily realized and our anniversary one long to be remembered for the rich display of God's Mighty power in extensively reviving his work. Since our last, peace and harmony have characterized us as a body, our only cause of regret being the low condition of religion among us. The changes with us during the past year have been few, yet some quite important; as dismissing some valuable members and receiving others. We have received since our last, by expereince and baptism 1 by letter 8. dismissed by letter 5 Excluded 1. So that our present number is 46.

We have chosen our beloved brethren M. Wilkes, J. P. Scott J. W. Jones, G. H. Scott and P. C. Scott to bear our letter & sit in our concil with you. May the spirit of meekness & love persuade all your breasts & control all your movements. Then will all your acts be with due reference to the Glory of God and meet his divine Sanction "Brethren pray for us that the word of the Lord may have free course and be glorified."

[p. 54]
Agreed to apply to the ensuing association for their next anuel meeting to be with us.

The Baptist church of Jesus Christ at Burlington Boone County Ky to the North bend association of Baptists when when met with the Bigbone Church third Friday in August 1846.

verr dear Brethren through the mercy and forbearance of an indulgent God, we are permitted to address you this our annuiel epistle. We have not as we could wish, that cheering inteligence to communicate impart of many accessions to our numbers still we do not despond. From our location as A church arise many responsibilities. Deeming our position second as to importance and remembering the language of our circular for 1844, in which it was set fourth as the duty of each church to maintain public worship upon each Lords day at its own place of worship, we have endeavered to meet our obligations in this respect. During the last year we have sustained three meetings regularly in each month and four part of the time. Our Beloved Brethren R. Kirtley A Drury & J. A. Kirtley have favored us with their faithful labours; to each of whome we feel under many obligations for their untiring exertions, to aid us in our humble efforts to advance the cause of Christ among us. Though our congregations at times are small still we do not feel discouraged, for the blessing of God is not vouchsafed [?] alone to the multitude, but where ever two or three are

[p. 62]
gathered together in my name there said the Saviour am I in the midst. Encouraged by this and and various promises, we would not [be] weary in wel doing knowing that in due season we shal reap if we faint not, but desire to be always found in the path of duty, ever abounding in the work of the Lord, Knowing that our labour is not in vain in the Lord.

We have during the last year, by contribution upon the part of some, and donations upon the part of others of the amount due them from the church, succeeded in extricating ourselves from a debt with which we have for some time been burdened in consequence of the erection of our Meeting house. We bless God that we are now unencumbered with debt and finished with a convenient, Subbstantial and Spacious house in which to worship God.

Our Chief cause of complaint is our coldness and inactivity in the cause of Christ. The inquiry arises from whence proceeds this general leanness & barrenness of our once fellowshiping Zion? It must be from neglect of duty. Prayer is offered too seldom & with too little earnestness. The condition of others is not sufficiently appreciated. Our contributions for the cause of missions are comparatively nothing hence the cause of missions languishes When the cry comes from the far off shores of China & Burmah, or from the western wilds of America "Come over and help us," our Boards are deaf to their entreaties because they have not the means necessary to supply the demand. Since our last communication one of our members (Bro. Horatio W. Jones) has given himself as a missionary to aid in the heaven approved work of bearing the news of a Saviour's dying to the perishing Indians, in whose sake of we

[p. 63]
especially entreat your prayers and Contributions. Through the medium of his and his fellow labourers letters we learn that "The hand of the Lord is with them and many are turning to the Lord" Brethren the field is the world, the harvest how great and the labourers how few, "pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth more labourers into this vineyear."

The present state of our church is as follows viz: Rec'd by exprience & baptism 0 by letter 0 restored 0 dismissed by letter 6 deceased 1 excluded 0 So that our present number is 39.

We send you this our letter by our beloved brethren S. G. Scott, G. H. Scott, Miles Wilks, John W. Jones, John P. Scott and P. C. Scott to sit with you in council and may the God of love and peace be with you to guide and direct you in all deliberations that his name may be glorified and the cause of truth advanced, is the prayer of your brethren at Burlington.

Brethren pray for us that we may be a united, humble and devoted church.

On motion of Broth. wilks the report of the Deacons respecting a supply of preaching for each Sabbeth is deferred until our next meeting until which time the Broth. Deacons are requested to have the pulpit supplied.
